About
Rock River is a fabulous fag destination for nudism and forest play in southern Vermont. We'd love to gather a bunch of queer/trans folks together so that we can enjoy this beautiful paradise. There are a few beaches and some of the most amazing swimming spots we've ever been to in New England.
It is important to note that Rock River is a historically cis-fag space, but that isn’t the only scene and there are definitely some gender freakos in the mix.
Directions
Rock River is located in Newfane, VT, with parking in Dummerston. Set your GPS for these coordinates:
42.947232778582865, -72.64014499314717There is a dirt parking lot on the northern side of Route 30. Often, that parking lot is full on hot summer days. Overflow parking is generally on the side of Route 30 near the lot. Some locals complain about this so it's possible that could change but that has been the case in our experience.
Public Transportation
The nearest transportation hub is Brattleboro, VT. Depending on where you are coming from, there are trains and buses that will get you to Brattleboro. There is no public transportation that we know of to get you the 10 miles from Brattleboro to Dummerston. Here is a Ride Share Google Doc we made for coordinating rides.
The Hike
*IMPORTANT*
- Wear sturdy shoes, sandals or water shoes that you don't mind getting wet.
- Cell service in this region is minimal, you may want to print out these directions. Click here for a text only version of the directions
Once you have arrived at the parking lot, the hike begins. Start by crossing Route 30 to the southern side. Make your way to Williamsville road and start walking up the right side. You will see a small side road on the right called Station Road. Follow Station Road until it turns into a hiking trail. Station Road kind of appears to be a driveway at times. Trust that you are going the right way. You will pass between some houses and eventually emerge onto a dirt trail. As long as the river is on your right, you are going the right way.
The first beach you come to is called Family Beach. This is not the spot. You will see a sign on a tree that says 'Clothing Optional Beyond This Point.' Keep going!
This section is some of the most treacherous hiking. In particular, there are some really steep, rocky parts that may be active waterfalls. Take it nice and slow :)
The terrain will start to lower to the level of the river. Eventually, you will see a rocky clearing by the river at the bend shown in the picture. This is the third beach. You will likely see some naked people enjoying the river. The people here were super sweet to us. This is a fun place to hang out and the river here is swift and deep so it makes for exciting swimming. But, this is not your final destination.
There is a staircase that goes up the hill near third beach. Climb to the top and continue on the ridge. You will encounter another staircase on your right which descends back down to the river. This is where you will need to wade into and cross the river.
On the other side of the river, follow the path upstream. Stay low near the river and you will hit the sandy beach. This is where we will likely be. Drop off your stuff, go for a swim, chat with the locals. Beyond the sandy beach are some tents and other spots to set up your stuff, a little away from the crowds.
Accessibility
Rock River has some pretty rugged terrain.
Getting there requires walking about a mile along a dirt path that has some steep and narrow parts, as well as parts that are rocky, slick, and wet. Further, you have to walk across the river in water that is calf deep to get to the party. We highly recommend sturdy shoes with good traction that you don’t mind getting wet (e.g., chacos, watershoes, etc)..
There is no food or water available so you should expect to carry in and carry out. Aside from the piss bottoms, there are not public bathrooms. This is truly just the middle of the woods and, since it's relatively difficult to get in and out, please prepare accordingly.
Where to Stay
The Rock River Preservation (RRP) group has some recommendations for campsites and hotels in the area here. This is a very popular region for outdoor tourism so early reservations for campgrounds and such are highly encouraged.
According to signs at Rock River, camping is allowed with a 9 day limit. Space may be limited, especially due to the damage from the July 2023 flood.
